SOJOURNER TRUTH
Truth, was born into slavery in 1797 as Isabella Baumfree in Ulster County, NY. Bought and sold four times beginning at age 11; she was brutally beaten, used as a chattel by her slave masters, and experienced harsh physical labor and violent punishments. To survive the harsh labor and intense beatings she would often run to a nearby tree where she would weep and cry out to Jesus. With great courage she claimed her freedom in broad daylight with her infant daughter, Sophia, on July 4th, 1826 when her master failed to honor his promise to free her. With the help of some Quaker friends, she became the first woman to fight and win a court case reclaiming her son, Peter, from being sold illegally into slavery in the South. In 1829 she moved to New York with her youngest son, Peter, looking for a better life and found work as a housekeeper. Being inspired by scripture and other abolitionists she joined the abolitionist movement. By the 1830’s she became a charismatic speaker speaking against slavery by detailing her first hand accounts of cruelty. By 1843 Isabella renamed herself Sojourner Truth in response to a Divine supernatural calling to ‘travel up and down (sojourn) the land’ using her life story, educating about the horrific truths of slavery, and sharing the gospel message of Jesus Christ. In 1851 she delivered her famous “Ain’t I a Woman” speech in Akron, Ohio. During the civil war she met President Lincoln and encouraged black men to fight for the Union Army. After the war, she was involved in the Freedmen’s Bureau helping freed slaves find jobs and build new lives. Sojourner Truth, a bold, gutsy, courageous woman who fought fervently against slavery, for human rights, and more specifically women’s right purchased a home in Michigan where her three daughters lived before passing in 1883. Her legacy lives on through many who are drawn to her courage to work so tirelessly against obvious injustices as a passionate freedom fighter.
